Weaving workshop in Antigua Guatemala by Wendy Carpenter!

Weaving workshop in Antigua Guatemala by Wendy Carpenter!

I just finished making a fiber wall sculpture sample for our workshop! I needed to see what we could design off-loom, that is portable, weaving with fabric, and dimensional! This weaving project can also be repeated and expanded a bond  at home with various frames . You will complete a creative high-quality art piece!

We will start with  a half-day at the market buying fabric for the workshop and also fabric for sewing a jacket at home. I’ll print off copies of  my 2017 jacket design pattern for anyone who might be interested. Over the last eight years, I have purchased a lot of jaspe fabric for my mission projects and will guide you through the dos and don't's with purchasing fabric in Guatemala. After the market, but before the workshop, each student will cut 70 half inch strips and fringe the selvages. I will have a sample strip and explain how to remove the weft threads.

The full day workshop in San Juan will entail warping a steel frame, making baritas (fabric covered straws), weaving a 3-D form, and basketry coiling techniques.  I will step by step demo, and like all my classes, there is always freedom to be creative, explore, and work intuitively.

The last half day at sue’s house will be combined art critique and wine celebration!. It is vital to have an ending open discussion ( brain-storming) what is working and what is not. I will guide you through design elements, composition, and possible changes. Often with creating art...less is more!  I don’t want you to go home with an unfinished art piece and not know how to complete it.

It’s certainly more involved to create fiber art than it is to make a functional craft piece. It is my understanding that you all want to explore fiber art on a different level. I have 40 years of experience with weaving fiber wall sculptures and mixed media wall hangings...it is this knowledge that I want to share with you! I have an online portfolio at interfibers.com to view my fiber art.  Each student will learn mixed media fiber technics, along with art composition, design elements, and personal expressionism through a literal/abstract interpretative art style.I watched my time with making the sample attached and it will take a full day along with the two half days to complete the project.

I want this project to be fun, trying to do too much in too little of time is stressful.

Student supply list:

Sharp fabric cutting scissors

Seamstress tape measure

Large eye darning needle

Medium size crochet hook

The two-day workshop student fee is $175 (five student class). The weaving materials that I will bring are included in the fee, but the blacksmith charges $15 for the frames. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity and feel free to contact me anytime! Wendy

Hello!
Was wondering if these classes are still available? And if they are taking place in Antigua, Guatemala.
