The fine art of fiber wall sculptures and hangings by Wendy Carpenter:
My Dynasty Chairs fiber wall-hangings are part a series entitled "Book of Changes." The I Ching, also known as Book of Changes, is the oldest of the Chinese classics, possessing a history of more than two and a half millennia of commentary and interpretation.
The Book of Changes is an influential text read throughout the world, providing inspiration to the worlds of religion, psychoanalysis, literature, and art. The interpretation of the readings found in the Book of Changes is a matter of centuries of debate, and many commentators have used the book symbolically, often to provide guidance for moral decision making as informed by Taoism and Confucianism.
I weaved the chair fabric flat with an authentic silk tablecloth purchased in China. It measures 4-feet by 3-feet as a set. Although the fabric was woven flat, it appears 3-dimensional through the construction and placement of the handwoven fabric.
