Teardrop Jadeite Necklace
The 19 Jadeite teardrop stone beads are hand-cut and polished by the Mayan Artisans of Guatemala. Each jadeite teardrop measures 1" long by a 1/4" wide combined with 52 coral beads. My classic necklace is based on the character of the jadeite stone with my unique hand-made sterling silver book-clasp design! The chain is 24" long, creating a 12" size necklace.
I work in Guatemala with the Mayan artisans through a fair trade/skill-building project. My work in Guatemala helps the indigenous communities sustain their traditional heritage, create revenue, and acquire new skills!
Guatemala is the home of Mayan jadeite and is found in the remote Motagua Valley quarries. To the Pre-Columbian people of Mesoamerica, jade represented breath, life, fertility, and power.
Jade is the term given to two similar gem materials, called jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is harder, denser, and scarcer than nephrite; it is found in a broader range of colors, from white through various greens to lilac, blue, black, and takes a high polish. Jadeite is a silicate of sodium and aluminum.
